Facts & Statistics
The deposit system is a closed loop, where cans and bottles are recycled into new ones. That’s how we maximize environmental benefits. When you return cans and PET bottles, you cut the climate impact in half compared to sorting them with other packaging for recycling. Altogether, this difference corresponds to a reduction of nearly 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents per year.
The Swedish deposit symbol has become a strong symbol of recycling, and returning packaging is now a natural part of everyday life in Sweden. In the SIFO surveys conducted by Pantamera, 96 percent of Swedes say that they return their cans and PET bottles for deposit.
In Sweden, the goal is for 90 percent of all cans and PET bottles to be recycled, and in recent years we have come very close to reaching that target, making us one of the best countries in the world at recycling beverage packaging. Deposit statistics from 2025 show that more than 3 billion cans and bottles were returned in total, which corresponds to 283 containers per person. This means we have now achieved a return rate of 88.4 percent. Great job!
