During this year, the deposit amount will be increased on beverage packaging made of PET and aluminum: from one to two SEK on aluminum cans and small PET bottles, and from two to three SEK on large PET. The goal of the deposit increase is to further stimulate more deposits in one of the world's most successful deposit systems.
The work is now underway and the first products will be on store shelves in early September 2025.
Raising the deposit amount is an extensive process for all actors in the deposit system.
- The packaging must be tested and registered in Returpack's system, to ensure that the packaging can be recycled into new beverage packaging
- The producers must update packaging and labels, and register these according to the retailer's revision routines.
- The retailer's cash register and purchasing system must be updated.
- All deposit machines will be updated to be able to handle the new deposit amounts.
The deposit mark applies
The deposit that is paid back is the amount that is on the packaging. This may mean that the same product can be found in two different types of packaging with two different deposit amounts during a transition period.
"The little extra driving force"
Recycling and more resource-efficient handling of materials are high on the agenda in both Europe and Sweden, with new rules and regulations. Returpack has 40 years of experience in leading the development of a robust return system with high commitment.
The deposit is often described as the little extra driving force in the deposit system that makes it work so effectively. Now the deposit amount is being increased on all packaging, making it even more attractive for consumers to make the right choice.
