Returpack is responsible for the Swedish deposit systems for metal cans and recyclable PET bottles for ready to drink beverages. We are a privately owned company. We are owned by 50 percent by the Swedish Brewery Association (Sveriges Bryggerier), and by 25 percent each by the Swedish Food Retailers’ Federation (Livsmedelshandlarna) and the Grocery Store Association (Svensk Dagligvaruhandel). We started the deposit system for aluminium cans in 1984 and for PET-bottles in 1994.
The basic conditions is a nationwide and compatible return system (you can buy your cans or bottles in one store and return them in another). There is also the Deposit Ordinance (decided by the Swedish Parliament) that regulate the deposit system:
“Anyone who professionally fills plastic bottles or metal cans with ready-to-drink beverages or who professionally imports ready-to-drink beverages to Sweden in plastic bottles or metal cans shall ensure that the bottles and cans are included in an approved recycling system.” (Ordinance SFS 2005:220)
All the containers are returned to our plant in Norrköping, a city situated approximately 160 km south of Stockholm. In 2019 we collected more than 2,15 billion containers. The deposit for cans and PET bottles up to 1 litre is 1 SEK, and 2 SEK for bottles over 1 litre.
